A central platform for the Medische Technologie program at HOGENT, designed to bring internships, innovation projects, events, and evaluations together in one place.
The idea
The program involves different groups of people — students, lecturers, administrators, and external partners — each with different responsibilities and workflows.
The goal of the platform was to replace fragmented administrative processes with a single system where users can submit requests, manage activities, track progress, and communicate around the different parts of the program.
What I built
I developed the platform as a full-stack application with different experiences and permissions depending on the user’s role.
Key features include:
- Internship management — Students can submit internship requests while lecturers can review, approve, or reject them.
- Internship evaluations — Create reusable evaluation templates and complete evaluations using dynamically generated forms.
- Innovation projects — Students can propose projects and track their required innovation hours.
- Event management — External partners and lecturers can propose events while students can register and track their participation.
- Role-based access — Different permissions and workflows for administrators, lecturers, students, and external partners.
- Notifications — Keep users informed about important changes and approvals.
- Email communication — Automated emails for relevant events and actions.
Technical implementation
The application was built with Next.js and TypeScript, using PostgreSQL and Prisma for the data layer. NextAuth handles authentication and role-based access, while Zod is used for validation.
The platform also includes scheduled background processing for tasks such as resetting yearly innovation hours and uses Resend for transactional email.
What I focused on
The main challenge was translating several real-world administrative workflows into a system that could be used by different types of users.
I focused on keeping these workflows clear and predictable while building a flexible data model that could support internships, evaluations, events, innovation projects, and their relationships.
